Our Dreams

Jesus so impacted a small group of friends that a few short years later they were accused of turning the world upside down. When you read the story, it seems that they were in fact turning the world the right way up!

So as a community of Jesus followers, we want to see the world turned the right way up and to flourish - we believe that God brings this flourishing through local churches. This might be things we do together as a church (for example our food bank, supporting people in their workplaces or in many other ways).

Therefore we want to help everyone who comes through our doors grow and become the best version of themselves – to be fully alive.

This growth comes as we connect with Jesus in a community of others who gather around Christ.

The way we seek to behave, how we are with one another, emerges from our understanding and experience of who God is, in being in His presence & as revealed in the Bible: it is how we find Him behaving towards us and He calls us to be like Him.

What this means:

Church isn’t something we go to on a Sunday, but a group of people we are in relationship with and share life with.
We don’t always see eye to eye on things but seek to work through our differences rather than to walk away.
We value honesty and openness and seek to journey with people through our brokenness, towards healing.
Family life is often messy and unpolished, but we value people growing and learning rather than doing it perfectly.

Please don’t misunderstand:

This kind of community isn’t always easy, nor is it about always being with our friends or people who are like us.
It takes time for trust and relationships to grow, requiring work and commitment from all.
This doesn’t mean that anything goes and that we won’t sometimes put in boundaries or say no.
While messy, we also want to do things well.

What this means:

When people make mistakes or their brokenness is evident, we seek to help people grow, learn, sort things out rather than punish or shame.
We respect that each of us are responsible for our own lives and choices, and we encourage people to make good choices without manipulation or coercion.
We seek to look at who God has made someone to be, rather than at their current circumstances or behaviour.
Maturity, not conformity, is our goal.

Please don’t misunderstand:

When someone’s behaviour affects other people or the wider church, we will put some things in place to protect others.
While we respect individuals we don’t buy into individualism.
We are willing to have difficult conversations with folks if we believe their choices are unhelpful to themselves or others.

What this means?

We gather together on the basis our faith and common connection with Jesus. He is the centre of our church community.
We recognise there are many things that Christians have different views and perspectives on beyond what we might regard as “primary issues”.
We value speaking about these views and perspectives in ways that give room for others to hold different views without being “wrong”.
We value curiosity and listening to others, especially when we disagree, rather than trying to “win an argument”.

Please don’t misunderstand:

We have some things that are non-negotiable. These are the core tenants of faith (as expressed for example in the Apostle’s creed). These are "primary issues".
There are some practices that we are unlikely to change on (eg. baptism of adults) even if there are people in our church who have different experiences or beliefs.
Sometimes we have to hold our personal views loosely for the sake of the mission and wellbeing of the wider CCE family. We can still hold our views, but not insist that others see things the same way.
